Product Information
(R)-Oxybutynin chloride is a peptide that is the primary active metabolite of oxybutynin, an antispasmodic agent. It is an agonist that activates the GABAA receptor. Oxybutynin chloride has been shown to be an effective treatment for overactive bladder and urinary incontinence in adults, although it has not been approved by the FDA for this use. This drug also has been shown to have effects on other ion channels such as calcium, potassium, and sodium channels. (R)-Oxybutynin chloride binds to a specific region on the GABAA receptor known as the gamma-2 subunit of the GABA-A receptor, which leads to increased opening of chloride ion channels in the cell membrane. This results in hyperpolarization of neurons and decreased neurotransmitter release from nerve cells.
