Description

Candelilla wax is a natural wax that is obtained from the Candelilla plant. It has been used in graphical methods for tracing lines, as a binder for paints, and as a coating to prevent rust and corrosion. The long-term toxicity of candelilla wax has been studied using methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) as the solvent. The MEK was found to be toxic, with an LD50 of 32 g/kg, while the LD50 of the wax was greater than 1000 g/kg. In toxicity studies on rats, hydrogenated candelilla wax had no observable toxic effects at doses up to 5000 mg/kg body weight. Candelilla wax is also used in dietary supplements such as fish oil capsules and vitamin E capsules. Candelilla wax can be used as a film-forming polymer when mixed with water vapor or other polycarboxylic acids such as citric acid or tartaric acid. This mixture can form a solid dispersion
