Cotrimoxazole is an antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. Cotrimoxazole has been shown to be effective against infections caused by C. glabrata, and is used in the treatment of infectious diseases such as bacterial rhinosinusitis, drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (DRSP), and urinary tract infections. Cotrimoxazole binds to the sulfamethoxazole-binding site on the 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Cotrimoxazole also has strong inhibitory effects on other bacteria and yeast, but not viruses. Inhibitors of this drug are cephalosporins and oral antibiotics. Cotrimoxazole can cause toxic epidermal necrolysis in some patients, which is a rare skin condition characterized by blistering rash with blisters or peeling skin.
