Ethoxy(pentafluoro)cyclotriphosphazene is an additive that is added to fluorine-containing gases for the purpose of increasing their effectiveness. It has been shown to outperform other additives, such as phosphazene, in terms of its ability to stabilize metal surfaces from corrosion. Ethoxy(pentafluoro)cyclotriphosphazene also has a nonflammable function and can be used in areas where flammable substances are prohibited. This additive reacts with nitrate ions in water and forms nitrite ions. It is stable at high temperatures and can be used in cycles with electrodes that are exposed to air or oxygen. The functional group of this additive is a phosphaalkene, which reacts with a nucleophile (e.g., hydroxide ion) by substitution on the phosphorus atom to form a phosphoryl group (-P=O). The reaction mechanism of this additive is nucleophilic substitution (SN2).
