2-(1-Oxo-2-phenylethyl)benzoic acid is a heterocyclic compound that is a reagent for the synthesis of benzylidene derivatives. It can be produced by alkaline hydrolysis of 2,6-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpiperidine with ethylamine and deoxybenzoin. The most important tautomeric forms are the 2,6-dioxo and 3,6-diphenylpiperidine forms. The equilibrium constant (K) for the conversion between these two tautomers is 1.4 × 10−3 at 25 °C in DMSO solution. In this equilibrium reaction, hydroxylamine reacts with the ester to produce an amide and benzoic acid. This reaction has been studied with NMR spectroscopic analysis to find out the mechanistic pathway of this reaction.
