4-Cotininecarboxylic acid is a metabolite of nicotine, the addictive substance in tobacco products. It is found in urine samples and has been shown to have a role in the development of cancer. This compound binds to epidermal growth factor receptors, which are involved in the growth of cells, and also has been shown to increase epidermal growth. 4-Cotininecarboxylic acid has been studied for its potential use as an anticancer agent, but it does not appear to be effective in treating cancer. It does, however, have a role in reducing tumor xenografts when used together with nicotine. 4-Cotininecarboxylic acid can be detected by electrochemical biosensors and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging at concentrations as low as 1 nM.
