Rifampicin is an antituberculosis drug that belongs to the class of rifamycins. It is a bactericidal agent that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby preventing transcription and replication. Rifampicin has been shown to have good metabolic stability in vitro and strong anti-tuberculosis activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Rifampicin also has a high affinity for cyano groups and can be used as a fluoro-substituted analog of isoniazid (INH) in the treatment of tuberculosis.
