4-Benzyloxy-3-methoxybenzyl alcohol is a synthetic diphenyl ether that has been used in the synthesis of dihydroisoquinolines. It has been shown to be a nucleophilic reagent, which can react with eugenol, an aromatic compound found in clove and cinnamon oils. This reaction produces benzoxazinones, which are pheromones. 4-Benzyloxy-3-methoxybenzyl alcohol has also been used as an imaging agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET). In both cases, the chemical is attached to a radioactive molecule that emits positrons. These positrons collide with electrons, releasing gamma rays that can be detected by the PET or MRI scanner. The resulting image provides information about tissue composition. 4-Benzyloxy-3-methoxybenzyl alcohol is synthesised from sulfamic acid and carbamic acid.
