1-(3,4-Dimethylphenyl)ethanol (1-DMPE) is a naturally occurring plant metabolite. It is produced by the oxidation of 3,4-dimethylphenol and other phenolic compounds in lentils. 1-DMPE has been shown to have a number of biotransformations mediated by S cerevisiae and human liver microsomes. These biotransformations include the conversion of 1-DMPE to choline and hydrogen bonding with choline, as well as the formation of aldehydes upon exposure to light. The conversion of 1-DMPE to choline may be important for maintaining membrane fluidity and integrity in plants.
