2-Sulfanyl-1H-benzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (BSAS) is a coordination compound that has been synthesized in the laboratory. It is a white solid that can be used as an adsorbent for removing metal ions, such as copper and mercury, from process streams. It can also be used to remove methylmercury from water and wastewater. BSAS has been shown to function well in a number of different applications including immobilization on magnetic particles or on an adsorbing resin, or as a liquid phase feedstock for the production of activated carbon. This compound has also been found to have antimicrobial properties against Gram positive bacteria when it is added to culture supernatants.
