Description:
1,2,5,6-Tetrabromohexane is a mixture of diastereoisomers that is used as a solvent and an intermediate in the production of butyric acid. It reacts with magnesium to form Grignard reagents and ethylmagnesium bromide. This compound may be used as an additive in foodstuff to prevent rancidity. 1,2,5,6-Tetrabromohexane also reacts with chlorides to form primary amino groups and ethyl chloride. The two stereoisomers can be separated by fractional crystallization or distillation.
