Diethyl 2-hydroxy-2-methylmalonate (DHM) is an organic compound that is used as an antifungal agent. It also has detergent and surfactant properties and is soluble in water, acetone, ether, and chloroform. DHM has been shown to inhibit the growth of a number of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The chemical inhibits the synthesis of DNA by inhibiting enzymes such as hydroxylases, monohydroxylases, dihydroxylases, and vinyl ethers. This inhibition of enzymatic activity leads to the accumulation of acetaldehyde which may cause cell death. DHM can be synthesized using chemoenzymatic or asymmetric synthesis methods.
