The enzyme 2-(4-Isobutylphenyl)propanenitrile hydroxylase is involved in the catalysis of the hydration of 2-(4-isobutylphenyl)propanenitrile to yield 4-hydroxybutyric acid. This enzyme is found in many different species, including bacteria and plants, but it is not found in mammals. The enzyme can be used for the production of a range of amides. It also has an important role in metabolism because it catalyzes the conversion of 4-hydroxybutyric acid to acetoacetic acid, which is then converted to acetone. The enzyme may be inhibited by carbon source and hydrogen chloride, although this inhibition can be reversed by adding a base such as sodium hydroxide solution or potassium phosphate.
