Product Information
2-C-Methyl-D-erythritol is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the biosynthesis of isoprenoids, which are important in the cell cycle and photosynthesis. It blocks the synthesis of the enzyme called acetyl-CoA carboxylase, which converts acetyl-CoA to malonyl-CoA. This causes a decrease in the production of isoprenoid precursors and leads to cell death. 2CME has been shown to inhibit plant pathogens, including human pathogens such as Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. 2CME has also been shown to be effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex. The specific antibody used in this study reacts with 2CME and may have potential for use as an anti-infective agent.
