2-Bromo-5-methoxybenzoic acid ethyl ester is a chiral indazole that is used as an analog of clozapine. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder, but not other psychiatric disorders. 2-Bromo-5-methoxybenzoic acid ethyl ester is synthesized by coupling 2 equivalents of phthalimide with 1 equivalent of bromoacetaldehyde diethyl acetal in the presence of a base such as sodium methoxide. The product can then be purified by recrystallization or distillation.
