1-Phenyl-2-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)ethan-1-one (PTZ) is a nitro triazole that has antifungal properties. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of human fungal pathogens and may be effective against dermatophytes. PTZ binds to the enzyme cytochrome P450 in the fungal cell membrane, which leads to an accumulation of reactive oxygen species and a decrease in ATP levels. This eventually leads to cell death by apoptosis or necrosis. PTZ has a high yield and can be prepared from inexpensive starting materials. The compound's crystal structure consists of an oxirane ring with two hydrogen bonds that are not found in other classes of antifungal agents. PTZ also forms metal halides when reacted with metals such as copper or silver, which may result in increased activity against fungi.
