(E)-1,1,1-Trichloro-4-ethoxy-but-3-en-2-one is an organic compound that belongs to the group of chlorocarbon compounds. It is a haloform (chloroform with three hydrogen atoms replaced by chlorine). The synthesis of (E)-1,1,1-Trichloro-4-ethoxy-but-3-en-2-one starts with the reaction of ethyl alcohol and chlorine gas in the presence of a catalytic amount of sodium hydroxide. This reaction gives two isomeric products: trichloroacetyl chloride and dichloroacetyl chloride. These two products can be separated by fractional distillation.
