4-Nitro-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine is a deoxyribonucleoside that has been synthesized from chloride and its high yield can be attributed to the catalytic properties of the nitro group. The n-oxide form of 4-nitro-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine is an adenosine analogue with antiviral activity against HIV type 1 (HIV-1) and glycosylation. 4NPP has shown industrial potential as a medicament for the treatment of HIV infection. It is eliminated by hydrolysis in vivo to form 4-aminopyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine.
