Methyl 3-bromo-4-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzoate is an ester that is used in the synthesis of vanillin. It is synthesized by the acid methyl esterification of 3-bromo-4-hydroxybenzoic acid and 5-methoxybenzaldehyde. The silver salt of this compound was found to be a useful catalyst for the esterification reaction, with a yield of 99%. Methyl 3-bromo-4-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzoate reacts with silver oxide to produce methyl 3,4,5,6 tetraacetylbenzoate. This reaction can also be catalyzed by the use of zinc chloride or sodium ethoxide.
