Darifenacin is an antispasmodic drug that inhibits p-glycoprotein (p-gp) and prevents the reuptake of neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine, dopamine, and serotonin. It is used for treatment of overactive bladder syndrome with symptoms of urinary frequency, urgency, and urge incontinence. It has been shown to be effective in clinical trials against bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Darifenacin is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes to its active form. This drug also reduces the production of α1-acid glycoprotein in the liver and may have a potential interaction with other drugs that are also metabolized by this enzyme system.
