2-Cyano-N-(3-phenylpropyl)acetamide belongs to a class of growth factors that bind to and activate the epidermal growth factor receptor. It is an agonist of the receptor tyrosine kinase, which is expressed in endothelial cells. This drug has been shown to induce mitogenesis by phosphorylation of proteins such as antiphosphotyrosine, leading to increased expression of platelet-derived growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor. 2-Cyano-N-(3-phenylpropyl)acetamide also promotes angiogenesis by inducing blood vessel formation through the release of VEGF and other proangiogenic factors.
