Product Information
2-(Ethoxymethyl)pyrrolidine is an electron-rich compound that can act as a reducing agent. It is readily converted to the corresponding anion, which reacts with singlet oxygen and perchlorate radicals in a photoreaction to produce ethylene glycol and formaldehyde. This chemical reaction is efficient because the 2-(ethoxymethyl)pyrrolidine radical has a high quantum yield of 0.7 (i.e., it absorbs light very easily). The reactants are regenerated by the addition of hydrogen peroxide, which also reduces the formaldehyde back to formic acid. The mechanism of this process is shown below:
2-(Ethoxymethyl)pyrrolidine + O2 = 2-(Ethoxymethyl)pyrrole radical
2-(Ethoxymethyl)pyrrole radical + O2 = 2-Oxopropyl pyrrole
2-Oxopropyl pyrrole +
