1-Methyl-1H-indazole-3-carboxylic acid (1MICA) is a diazonium salt that is used in analytical chemistry as an indicator for the presence of chlorides. 1MICA can be synthesized by the methylation of indazole with formaldehyde and sodium cyanide. This compound is used as a preservative in pharmaceutical preparations, such as medicines and vaccines. 1MICA has been detected in synthetic cannabinoids, which are often used to treat chronic pain, although this use is not approved by the FDA. The chromatographic method for the detection of 1MICA consists of absorption on silica gel and elution with n-hexane:2-propanol:acetic acid (90:10:0.5).
