2,4-Bis[8-hydroxy-1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidin-9-yl]squaraine is a transition metal complex that belongs to the group of polymer dyes. It has been shown to be an efficient nonlinear optical material with a high index of refraction and an optimum concentration of 0.01 mol/L. The polymer dye is soluble in water and shows negligible absorption in the visible region. The nonlinear optical properties are due to its transition metal complex structure which has two dipoles on each molecule. These dipoles interact with each other and generate an electric field that can be used for light dispersion or coupling.
