N,N-Diethylguanidinium acetate is a water-soluble chemical used as an oxidation catalyst in the production of other chemicals. It has been shown to be active against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and species of the genus Citrobacter. N,N-Diethylguanidinium acetate also inhibits the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic pathogen that causes pneumonia and septicemia in patients with impaired immune systems. The mechanism of its action is not well understood, but it is believed to involve a nucleophilic attack on the methyl group of citric acid.
