Trans-2-phenylcyclopropylamine hydrochloride is a potent inhibitor of the 5-HT7 receptor. The inhibitory activity of this drug has been shown in vitro to be due to its ability to decrease the concentration of free 5-HT in cells. Trans-2-phenylcyclopropylamine hydrochloride inhibits the growth of cancer cells, and can be used as an adjuvant therapy for cancer treatment. It also has a potent inhibitory effect on cell nuclei, which may be due to its ability to demethylate DNA and thus block transcription and replication. Trans-2-phenylcyclopropylamine hydrochloride affects bronchial smooth muscle contractility and is used in some countries as a bronchodilator. This drug also causes physiological effects such as nausea, vomiting, and headache at high doses.
