Acetylcholinesterase is a natural enzyme that degrades the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Acetylcholinesterase has been shown to play an important role in neuronal death and is used as a biochemical marker for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Acetylcholinesterase has also been found to be involved in apoptosis, which is the process of programmed cell death. It has been demonstrated that inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase can induce apoptosis by disrupting the balance between pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic proteins in cancer tissues. Acetylcholinesterase can also bind to fluorescent molecules, which makes it suitable for use in fluorescence probe techniques.
