Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is an enzyme that catalyzes the reversible oxidation of glucose-6-phosphate to 6-phosphogluconolactone. G6PD deficiency is a genetic disorder that can cause hemolysis, particularly under conditions of oxidative stress. This enzyme is primarily found in the liver, erythrocytes, and kidney cortex. G6PD has been shown to have antiviral properties against Onchocerca volvulus and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It also has been shown to be effective in treating cardiac disease and coagulation disorders.
