Keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) is a protein derived from the keyhole limpet, a marine snail. KLH has been used in experimental models for mouse monoclonal antibody production and as a biological marker for skin cancer. It has shown toxicity studies in mice with melanoma, and can be used to create an antigen that stimulates a T-cell response against melanoma. KLH also has biological properties such as binding to cell factors and stimulating the release of interferon alpha-2b. KLH is not toxic or allergenic and does not provoke an immunological reaction in humans, making it an ideal candidate for use as a vaccine adjuvant.
