Adenosine deaminase is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of adenosine to inosine. It is a white, crystalline powder with a molecular weight of about 340 kilodaltons. The enzyme is present in all cells, but its activity is much higher in lymphocytes and macrophages than in other tissues. Adenosine deaminase from bovine spleen has been used for the diagnosis and treatment of pleural effusion due to malignant cell infiltration. This enzyme has also been found to be involved in mitochondrial functions and postprandial blood glucose metabolism, as well as being a potential therapy for diabetes mellitus type 2.
