Aldehyde dehydrogenase is a cytosolic protein that is expressed in skin cells. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of adrenocortical carcinoma cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of all-trans-retinoic acid. This enzyme has also been found in type strain S. cerevisiae and has been used as a growth factor for infectious diseases. Aldehyde dehydrogenase is involved in fatty acid synthesis, and mutations can lead to skin disorders such as ichthyosis or atopic dermatitis.
