Description:

Proteus is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria. Proteus sp. L-glutamic dehydrogenase (NADP) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of glutamate to 2-oxoglutarate and ammonia. The enzyme has been shown to be active at pH 7, but also shows activity at pH 4.5, which may be due to its carbon source. The reaction mechanism for NADP-dependent glutamate dehydrogenase has been studied extensively and is well understood. Glutamate dehydrogenase consists of two subunits: the large subunit and the small subunit. The small subunit binds NADP and transfers electrons to the large subunit, which then donates them to glutamate, forming alpha-ketoglutarate and ammonia. This enzyme participates in amino acid metabolism as well as protein synthesis by providing an intermediate step in the conversion of glutamate into alpha-ketoglutarate, which is used for protein synthesis in mitochondria.
