Ceruloplasmin is a ferroxidase that is found in the human body. It plays an important role in iron homeostasis and has been shown to be involved in the molecular pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus type 2. Ceruloplasmin also has a protective effect on probiotic bacteria and has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth. Ceruloplasmin binds to bacterioferritin, which can reduce the toxicity of nitric oxide radicals. The protein's biological properties have been studied using x-ray crystal structures and titration calorimetry methods. Ceruloplasmin is found at physiological levels in human serum, but may not be detectable in people with hepatic steatosis or other liver diseases.
