DL-lysine methyl ester dihydrochloride is a nitro compound that can be synthesized by reacting lysine methyl ester hydrochloride with nitric acid. The reaction is spontaneous and produces a mixture of two compounds, DL-lysine methyl ester hydrochloride and 2-nitroimidazole. The bioreductive properties of DL-lysine methyl ester dihydrochloride have been studied using metal ions such as copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe). This compound does not react with thionyl chloride, but it reacts with hydroxyl radicals to produce the nitroimidazole analog of DL-lysine methyl ester dihydrochloride.
