(+/-)-7-Azabicyclo[4.2.0]octan-8-on is a hydroxy group, lactams, isomerisation, lactam, β-amino acid, β-lactam enantiomer that has been shown to have antibiotic properties. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting protein synthesis. (+/-)-7-Azabicyclo[4.2.0]octan-8-on has been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens strains as well as other gram positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Enterococcus faecalis.
