2,4-Dicyanophenol is a chemical compound that has the chemical formula C6H3N2O2. It is a carbonyl group with two pyrimidine rings and one imino group. 2,4-Dicyanophenol inhibits xanthine oxidase by binding to its active site and blocking its access to xanthine. This prevents oxidation of hypoxanthine to xanthine and accumulation of uric acid in the blood. 2,4-Dicyanophenol has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase with an inhibitory potency of 3.5 μM. It also inhibits methylation of guanine residues in DNA, which leads to DNA damage and oral toxicity.
