Description:

Juvenile hormone II is a hormone that is responsible for the development of insect juvenile stages. Juvenile hormone II is produced by the prothoracic gland and acts on the corpora allata, stimulating it to produce juvenile hormone III. The prothoracic gland in insects produces juvenile hormone II to control molting, which occurs through a process called ecdysis. Juvenile hormone II is not active on its own, but must be converted into juvenile hormone III by methyl transferase in order to be effective. This conversion takes place in vivo. In vitro synthesis of juvenile hormones can be accomplished using a bioassay or by applying matrix effects to fatty acids. Juvenile hormones are also used as analytical chemistry standards due to their hydroxyl group and high molecular weight.
