Hexahydro-1H-pyrrolizin-1-ol is a cholinergic compound that is synthesized by the cross-coupling of l-tartaric acid and bromoacetonitrile in vivo. The compound has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against a number of different bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Hexahydro-1H-pyrrolizin-1-ol is also an enantiopure molecule with a functional group on each end, making it hydrophilic. It has been suggested as a potential treatment for mental disorders, although studies are still needed to confirm this effect.
