Product Information
Aciclovir benzoate is a prodrug of acyclovir, a nucleoside analogue that is converted to acyclovir by the body. Aciclovir benzoate has been shown to inhibit the replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV), and other DNA viruses such as human cytomegalovirus, varicella-zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus and vaccinia virus. Aciclovir benzoate is not active against RNA viruses such as influenza A or parainfluenza type 3. The drug binds to viral DNA in the infected cells and prevents its duplication by inhibiting the enzyme thymidine kinase. Aciclovir benzoate has been shown to be more potent than acyclovir at inhibiting HSV replication when given intranasally.
