1-Propionyl-L-proline is a l-amino acid with the divalent side chain of proline. It is the product of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction and can be found in both expressed and sedimented forms. 1-Propionyl-L-proline is a substrate for polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, which can be used to distinguish between different strains of bacteria. The size of its diffraction profile is dependent on the pH of the solution it is in, with a higher pH showing a larger profile. 1-Propionyl-L-proline has been shown to act as an acylase, catalyzing the hydrolysis of various substrates such as glycerol esters and choline esters. It also acts as a residue in some proteins such as phosphoglycerate kinase.
