2-(Adamantan-2-yl)ethan-1-amine is a potential antiviral drug that has been shown to have an effect on influenza virus. It interacts with the viral envelope protein, inhibiting its ability to bind to host cells. 2-(Adamantan-2-yl)ethan-1-amine also inhibits the replication of other enveloped viruses, such as herpes simplex virus and vesicular stomatitis virus. The compound has been shown to be virucidal against influenza A and B viruses in vitro. 2-(Adamantan-2-yl)ethan-1-amine is a carboxylic acid derivative of adamantane, which is a cyclic hydrocarbon with two carbons and six hydrogen atoms. This drug is synthesized by the reaction of amines with acid chlorides in the presence of carbonic acid or carbon dioxide. The synthesis can also involve amides or carboxylic acids.
