Description:

(3S,4S)-Tetrahydrofuran-3,4-diol is a tetrahydrofuran derivative that reacts with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid in the presence of a lipase to produce (3R,4R)-tetrahydrofuran-3,4-diol. This reaction can be used as a way to synthesize carbohydrates. The reaction mixture has a viscosity of 1.2 cP and shows ring opening and decoupling on the nmr spectra. The product has an equimolecular ratio of 1:1 when reacted with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. Furanose rings are symmetrical molecules with three oxygen atoms on one side and four on the other. Furanose rings are also known as 3-sugar or 4-sugar rings, depending on whether they contain three or four sugar units respectively.
