Lipoamido-dPEG8-acid is a nanomaterial that has a cyclic structure. It can be synthesized to have an affinity for certain cellular components and thus localize in desired areas. Lipoamido-dPEG8-acid has been shown to have a high efficiency of uptake and cellular uptake, which may be due to the encapsulation of the material. Lipoamido-dPEG8-acid also functions as a photophysical material by generating light when irradiated with near infrared or visible light. The light generated can be used in biomedical imaging techniques such as fluorescence microscopy or optical coherence tomography. Lipoamido-dPEG8-acid also has mitochondria localization effects and functions by increasing mitochondrial membrane potential, which leads to increased ATP production. This increase in ATP production is achieved through the inhibition of autophagy, which is the process of degradation of unnecessary or dysfunctional cellular components by lysosomes.
