Terazosin is a potent inhibitor of the action of the alpha-1A-adrenergic receptor. It binds to the alpha-1A-adrenergic receptor, which is found in tissues such as blood vessels, heart, and bladder. The binding of terazosin to the alpha-1A-adrenergic receptor prevents epinephrine from activating it. Terazosin is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and urinary retention due to an enlarged prostate gland.
Terazosin has been shown to activate some other receptors, including dopamine receptors, serotonin receptors, and histamine receptors. These properties have not been studied extensively but may be responsible for some side effects associated with terazosin therapy, such as orthostatic hypotension and sedation.
