Product Information
Lignins are plant-derived polymers that contain a variety of chemical structures, including benzene rings. Lignins have been shown to be an essential nutrient in the gut of termites and other insects, where they are broken down by bacteria to form sulfides. The sulfide produced is then used as an electron donor for the reduction of oxygen to water. Lignin has also been shown to stabilize the bacterial membrane by forming a multilayer on the outside of the cell wall and by interacting with the cytochrome p450 enzyme system.
1-Amino-3-benzoimidazol-1-yl-propan-2-ol is a lignin found in woody plants. It can be converted into 1,2,4,5,6 tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophene by treatment with alkali metal hydroxides or amines at high temperatures.
