N-(2-Aminoethyl)maleimide hydrochloride is a cytotoxic drug that inhibits the growth of cancer cells by binding to folic acid and lectins. This compound has been shown to enhance the efficiency of thermococcus litoralis, an efficient method for the treatment of tumors. N-(2-Aminoethyl)maleimide hydrochloride also binds to actin and enhances the polymerase activity of DNA, which leads to a conformational change in the cell morphology. The ability to form a covalent bond with azobenzene allows this agent to bind efficiently to erythrocytes.
