5-(2,4-Dichlorophenyl)-2-furoic acid is an antibacterial agent that has been shown to have a cytotoxic effect on tumor cells. The biological activity of this compound has been shown in vitro and in vivo. 5-(2,4-Dichlorophenyl)-2-furoic acid has been found to inhibit the growth of tumor cells by interfering with their metabolism and inhibiting the synthesis of DNA, RNA and proteins. 5-(2,4-Dichlorophenyl)-2-furoic acid also inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as Enterococcus faecalis. This antibiotic has been shown to destroy bacterial cell walls by oxidation of chitin at the interface between the cell wall and cytoplasmic membrane. The mechanism for this action is not yet clear, but it may involve photoelectrical effects or generation of reactive oxygen species.
