4-P-PDOT is a potential biomarker for the physiological effects of pharmacological agents. It has been shown to have cytosolic calcium and mitochondrial membrane potential as its main targets, which are important in cell energy metabolism. 4-P-PDOT can be used to assess the effects of pharmacological agents on cancer tissues by measuring mitochondrial membrane potential. 4-P-PDOT also has a strong binding affinity for dopamine and may be used as a marker for Parkinson's disease.
