Cariporide is a pharmacological agent that inhibits the exchange of sodium and potassium ions in cardiac muscle cells. It is used for the treatment of heart failure and myocardial infarcts. Cariporide prevents the accumulation of intracellular calcium, which causes contraction in the heart muscle, thereby reducing the workload on the heart. Cariporide also inhibits phosphorylation or dephosphorylation of proteins and other regulatory enzymes involved in signal transduction pathways. This drug has been shown to be effective for bowel disease and ventricular arrhythmias (arrhythmias that originate from the lower chambers of the heart). The molecular mechanism of cariporide-induced inhibition is by binding to and inhibiting myocardial Na+/K+ ATPase activity, which is responsible for pumping sodium into cells and potassium out of cells.
