2-Amino-5-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenol is an antiparasitic, antibiotic and antiviral agent. It is a natural product that can be found in the bark of the South American tree "Cinchona pubescens". 2-Amino-5-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenol has been shown to have antiplasmodial activity against the protozoan Plasmodium falciparum. Its mechanism of action is not yet clear, but it may inhibit protein synthesis or block DNA synthesis.
2-Amino-5-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenol has also been found to inhibit HIV replication in vitro and to be active against HIV strains resistant to other anti-HIV drugs such as AZT and 3TC.
